M/S «CARNIVAL PRIDE»
– cruise ship delivered from Kvaerner Masa-Yards Helsinki New Shipyard
Denne artikkelen er tre år eller eldre.
Yard no. 500, a 85,700 gross tonne cruise ship was delivered in December to Carnival Cruise Lines from Kvaerner Masa-Yards Helsinki New Shipyard. The delivery is the third of this type following "Costa Atlantica" which was delivered 30 June 2000 and "Carnival Pride" which was delivered 12 April this year.
The sea trials, including nearly 100 different tests, were very successful. After detailed testing, it can be concluded that "Carnival Pride" fulfilled, or superseded the specified requirements.
In January last year Carnival declared the option for a third ship in the Spirit class for delivery during the summer of 2002. The price was about FIM two billion. Then in August a further contract was concluded for a fourth vessel at the same price of the so-called "8000-class" Panamax ships. This latest addition is to be delivered by the end of 2003.
Panamax-Max
"8000-class" cruise ships
This new generation cruise ship series for Carnival and Costa is designed for competitive cruise operation long into the new millenium, through latest technology and a layout optimised for current cruise market needs and market perspectives.
The ship carries a total of 2,680 passengers (lower beds: 2,114 passengeres) in a total of 1,057 staterooms. Compared to earlier cruise liners of this size, the relative number of outside passenger staterooms and staterooms with balcony is very high; 80% of all the staterooms are outside staterooms and 70% of all the staterooms have a balcony. This is achieved by adding one passenger cabin deck in the more narrow superstructure.
The crew capacity is 902 in 509 crew staterooms. There are 12 passenger decks. The ship's hospital is on Deck A with all necessary facilities for operations, x-ray, laboratory testing etc.
The steel plates for the ship have been supplied by Inexa and Fundia, and the pre-fabricated modules by Kvaerner Masa-Yards Piikkiö Works.

Machinery
«Carnival Pride» has a diesel-electric machinery, consisting of six Wärtsilä 9L46D diesel engines, with a total power of 62,370 kW, each connected to an ABB alternator producing electricity to the ship's main electric network at 1 KV 60 HZ 3 phase. The propulsion units consist of two azimuthing electric ABB Azipod propulsion units, each with a power of 17.6 MW. The ABB Azipod units makes it possible to maintain full control during crash stops, i.e. the ship is steerable during this manoeuver, and the crash stop distance is remarkably shorter than that of a conventional ship. This increases safety in an emergency. Also the vibration and noise levels are low, which adds to passenger comfort onboard.
ABB Azipod is a podded electric propulsion unit, azimuthing through 360¡. It incorporates an electric AC motor, located inside the propeller pod, which directly drives a fixed-pitch propeller. It has been developed jointly by Kvaerner Masa-Yards and ABB Industry. With ABB Azipod propulsion no shaft lines, internal electric propulsion motors, rudders, no transversal stern thrusters are needed. Weight is saved, and space is available for other use. The ship's manoeuvrability is much improved, and the ABB Azipod propulsion system improves the ship's fuel efficiency.
The ship has three Brunvoll 1.91 MW tunnel thrusters in the bow. The service speed is 22 knots. Emergency power is generated by a Cummins diesel engine with ABB generator. Power from the main switchboard is supplied to 440V switchboards via three transformers to serve auxiliary machinery and ships services. A separate MG stabilised power system is supplying lighting and small consumer needs.
Brown Brothers has supplied the fin stabilizers. The provision cooling and AC cooling is from York Marine, the insulation from Partek Paroc and the ventilation and airconditioning from Koja Marine. The evaporator has been supplied by Pall Rochem and Alfa Laval Desalt. Aalborg Industries has delivered auxiliary oil fired boilers and exhaust gas boilers.
Others
ABB Control has installed the switchboards and distribution boards, and Valmarine the monitoring, control and automation system. The electric cables are from Helkama Bica. The navigation equipment has been installed and delivered by STN Atlas. TrioVing has supplied the lockings systems, and Napa the loadcalculator.
The delivery schedule from Kvaerner Masa-Yards Helsinki New Shipyard now looks as follows: NB-501 "Carnival Legend" summer 2002, NB-502 for Carnival's Italian company Costa Crociere spring 2003, and the new order for Carnival, NB-503, "Carnival Miracle" end 2003.
